Costume or Couture?

A couple weeks ago, I accompanied my friend to the opening of the Daphne Guinness exhibit at FIT, in the beating heart of NYC's Fashion District. Co-curated by Valerie Steele and Daphne Guinness herself, the exhibition features almost 100 pieces from Ms. Guinness' extensive wardrobe.

Modeled after her NYC abode, the collection is an allusion of smoke screens and reflections, allowing the audience to gaze into each carefully selected piece from a 360 angle. Each item was a feast for the eyes featuring no shortage of dangerously sky-high shoes, disco-ball reflections, breathtaking plumes and detailing fit for the reigning queen she is. She certainly proved what she loves. "I'm like a Magpie, I love everything that sparkles."

From McQueen to Balmain, Chanel to Alaia, every piece is a feast for the eyes, and deep down, I wish I lived the same lifestyle that merits playing dress up in couture everyday. But unlike us mere mortals, Daphne turns the extraordinary into everyday life. I believe Valentino put it into the most eloquent of words:  "“Life is a stage for Daphne, funerals or balls, she always makes a performance.”

Don't take my word for it, check out this free exhibition at FIT until it's gone forever on January 12, 2012...  Happy Halloween!
